About Robert Allan
Robert Allan, PhD is an internationally recognized clinical psychologist with practice specialties in cardiac psychology, stress, and anger management, and pain medicine. Dr. Allan holds appointments as Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychology in Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College and Professional Associate, New York-Presbyterian Hospital. He is the psychologist for the Weill Cornell Center for Comprehensive Spine Care. Dr. Allan is a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine.
The second edition of "Heart and Mind: the Practice of Cardiac Psychology," co-edited with cardiologist Jeffrey Fisher, MD, was published by the American Psychological Association (APA) in 2012. Dr. Allan's previous book is "Getting Control of Your Anger" (McGraw Hill). Allan’s first book, co-edited with cardiologist Stephen Scheidt, M.D. is "Heart & Mind: the Practice of Cardiac Psychology," the seminal book in the field, published by APA in 1996. Dr. Allan has also written numerous articles and book chapters in major medical and psychological journals and textbooks on the relationship between psychosocial factors and heart disease.
In 2015, Allan won grand prize in the 25th Weill Cornell Medical Library Art Show for his music video, "Homage to Vermeer," an appreciation of Vermeer's paintings, accompanied by Allan's original music, performed by Allan and world famous musicians.
Dr. Allan was recipient of the 2002 Timothy Jeffrey Award for “outstanding contributions to clinical health psychology” from APA. He conducted the first stress reduction program for officers and wives at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Dr. Allan had an extensive interview about "anger management" with Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America, prompted by the eponymous movie. He has served as media “stress expert” for Weill Cornell Medical College/New York Presbyterian Hospital, appearing on the Today Show as well as many other news programs.
Robert Allan received his Ph.D. degree in clinical psychology from New York University and his Bachelors degree from Queens College of the City University of New York. He has also studied at the Juilliard School and worked as a professional pianist and keyboard player for many years, performing around the U.S., Europe, and Morocco. Allan has created CD's of his original music with noted violinist Tim Fain and legendary bassist Ron Carter.
